Hard Times

20130827-091800.jpgThree weeks into my latest ketogenic diet, things took a turn for the worse. For about 8 days I suffered from what felt like severe hypoglycaemia. I had no energy what so ever and even getting out of bed to walk to the toilet became a major struggle. At the same time, my liver function tests took a dramatic turn for the worse, with many values four times higher than my worst past results.

Now, I know that on the ketogenic diet there can be hypoglycaemia type symptoms as cells adjust from glucose to ketone based metabolism, and these can last for quite some time, but the dramatic liver function decline has me concerned.

My oncologist is baffled by the results. On one hand, my CEA keeps going down, indicating reduced tumour activity, but the liver values point to major progression. He said that he has never seen anything like this.

Decided to stick with the diet, and after the 8th day my energy returned, though still not up to my previous levels.

Unfortunately liver swelling and pain also made a come back and I may need to bring up my next round of german therapies.

About Ren

I have been diagnosed with stage 4, metastatic colorectal cancer in October 2012, 3 days after my 44th birthday. There is no cure, but I am determined to go down the road less travelled to find one. I have setup this blog to document my journey and hopefully help others in the process. My view is that if there is a cure, it does not lie with traditional chemo, but with the immune system. Time will tell.
